Experience

Michael has over 35 years of experience as a leader of nonprofit organizations and entrepreneurial businesses. Prior to joining Capacity Partners, Michael served in several executive positions. This includes 12 years as Chief Executive Officer of the Bender JCC of Greater Washington where he worked with the board of directors to develop the JCC’s vision and strategic direction and led the organization’s professional staff. Before becoming CEO, he served as the JCC’s Chief Operating Officer for three years. He also was interim CEO at ShalomLearning.

Prior to becoming a nonprofit executive, Michael owned and managed businesses in the manufacturing, service, and technology industries, and has served in a variety of volunteer leadership roles in community and nonprofit organizations. In addition, Michael is a regular guest lecturer on Strategic Management for Nonprofit & Public Organizations at University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business.

Education & Certification

Michael received his B.A. in public policy from Duke University and his M.B.A. with concentrations in Finance and Public /Nonprofit Management from Columbia University. He has a certificate in Leadership Coaching from Georgetown University and a Certificate of Nonprofit Board Consulting from BoardSource, the recognized leader in nonprofit board leadership.

Community Service

Michael currently serves on the Board of Nonprofit Village, where he also chairs the Governance Committee. In addition, he serves on the Leadership Montgomery Program Committee. In the past, Michael has served on the Board of Directors of the JCC Association of North America, the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, and the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation.
